Feeding time at the Buffalo Jump Off Ranch in South Dakota.

Drs. Ekstrom and Bunkis made it safely to South Dakota and are enjoying the time of their lives “on the ranch”. Yesterday was feeding day on the Peterson’s Ranch (Buffalo Jump Off Ranch) in South Dakota (14,000 acres, 600 head of buffalo “on the range” plus a few hundred head of cattle in separate lots). Ten of us loaded up in large, rugged Ford 350 pickup trucks (sorry, President Biden, it is difficult to foresee a bunch of charging stations on the range and people driving electric pickup trucks just yet), the bed of one of the trucks loaded with thumb sized, nutritional pellets. These pellets are made of a mixture of corn, oats, other nutritional supplements and held together by molasses. We rode over open range, taking in some of the most breath taking scenery you will ever see, looking for the main buffalo herd. Once spotted, we drove towards the herd. These are majestic wild animals but from the sight of the truck and us honking our horns, they know it’s safe to roam up to the trucks and to follow them, as we slowly drove over the range and shoveled the pellets out behind the truck. The grass is not plentiful this summer for lack of rain. This small load of pellets seems like such a small amount to be giving such a large herd but apparently, this amount of supplementation is significant and keeps the herd healthy, new calves coming in the spring, and continues the cycle of life for these animals. The Peterson’s ranch buffalo get sold to a processing plant in Colorado, which in turn supplies all of the Whole Foods grocery stores in the USA – so there is a good chance that you have had some buffalo from this ranch if you shop at Whole Foods!

We have continued monitoring the COVID news every day and, right now, the news is rather bleak. The Delta variant is running rampant across the country but more and more, the United States is becoming a divided country – of the vaccinated and the unvaccinated (individuals and States). Cities, States, schools and private companies are mandating that their students, employees, etc are fully vaccinated – a move both of our practices took months ago. After every blog, we get comments telling us that vaccinated people are also getting ill and blasting us for advocating a government conspiracy advocating vaccination. We totally agree that vaccinated people are also getting ill (that is why social distancing, mask wearing and other common sense measures continue to make sense) – but the vaccinated who are getting ill are coming down with a mild illness, are not filling our hospitals and ICU’s and not getting the devastating “long COVID’ symptoms. On the other hand, ICU’s, hospitals and the health care systems in general in the low vaccination states like Louisiana and Florida are bursting at the seams due to record numbers of severely ill and dying, unvaccinated patients. This pandemic is not political and we are not picking sides! Science and common sense tells us all, get vaccinated and follow public health guidelines – you will stay safe and we can beat this thing!
